Tartan & Tweed Tam has elegant Fair Isle looks with utmost simplicity. The fabric is interesting and uncomplicated. Knit in-the-round. Seamless construction continually stranded around without having to cut or weave in ends but for the start and finish. Combination concentric and segmented increases make this tam’s construction unique. Pattern includes yarn weight variations, and options which can be worked into any size, or a straight-sided toque (beanie), making this pattern versatile with many ways to knit.

This tam was originally designed in DK-weight with Rowan Felted Tweed, but added fingering-weight Shetland yarn, so it is written for two weights of yarn.

Size: To fit 21-22” head, with options to make smaller or larger.  Tam measures 10.5“ in diameter, 8” deep, and 19” circumference of band.
Yarns: Version A: Rowan Felted Tweed DK. Version B: Rowan Fine Tweed, Jamiesons Of Shetland Spindrift 2ply, Virtual Yarns Hebridean 2ply. ( Worsted-weight for toque option in version-A only.) 1 ball each in 3 colors.
Needles & Gauge:  Version-A: DK-weight. Gauge: 24-26 sts = 4”10cm. Needles US 4 – 3.50 or size to get gauge, and one size smaller for rib.  Version-B: Fingering-weight. Gauge: 28-30 sts = 4” 10cm Needles US 3 – 3.25mm or size to get gauge, and one size smaller for rib.

Note: You may easily substitute DK yarn for version-B making a larger tam (dimensions unknown), and alternately, the fingering-weight yarn for version-A making a small size tam (dimensions unknown). Worsted-weight is a good choice for toque option in version-A only. Use gauge listed as your guide and note that yardage is not factored for options or substitutions.

Yardage: Total yardage is aprox 160 – 180y [146 – 164m] for the whole tam. You will 3 colors.

Skills: Basic stranding, i-cord cast-on or bind-off, keeping in pattern through shaping, increase/decrease.
