Folk Socks

Have started a little project from this book :

The “Classic Sock” .

Finally something for Jeff, though I had to twist his arm leg to let me knit them for him.  He’s just so sensitive to anything even remotely woolly, but I’m very confident the soft superwash merino wool & nylon blend will be soft enough. At about a thousand stitches per inch, these are going to take the remainder of spring and into the summer.  However, I do have a little fantasy of whipping them out, then carrying on with yet another pair from the same book ~maybe the Welsh Country Stockings I posted over in the sidebar, which I envision making for my sister-in-law (I’ve bought the yarn already) Then, after flying through those, I’ll be finally ready to knit myself a pair of knee-high socks of some kind.  Maybe even still another from the book, such as the ” Schottische Kilt Hose” from the same book … or something very kilt-hose-like from another source. We’ll see, that’s far down the road, and as yet, aside from these kilt hoseI’ve not knit a single pair of regular socks yet ! Ever !

  1. Yes – but you started with the difficult ones – anything else will be easy peasy! I would be careful about 100% wool for socks though – it tends to wear badly – a little bit of nylon does the job – I know a source………just watch this space……..what colour would Jeff prefer?

    • Oh Lizzie, thank you for pointing that out. Confused, I looked at the label, and why I thought they were 100% wool is crazy, they’re 75% wool and 25%nylon. ( I edited the post). Its the KnitPicks “Stroll” line. I looked in the local yarn shops and couldn’t find basic heathered grey, which was what Jeff wanted, they’re all crazy self-striping colorways, or alpaca solids or bright colors. Just basic sock yarn I can’t believe I had to order online. This isn’t UK 😉 . xx

  2. Love these basic socks. I agree with you about finding the simple sock yarns. My fav so far has been Lana Grossa, but admittedly I haven’t tried a lot of others. I like a superwash yarn that doesn’t go all floppy in between washings, and Lana Grossa acts like a regular wool yarn. Keep me posted on how the KP yarn acts once knitted up.

    • ‘Go all floppy between washings’????? Oh no, does not sound good. Perhaps I ought to return the other yarn I was going to knit up the Welsh Country Stockings in. Thanks ! Can Lana Grossa be found at Sonoma Yarns?

  3. You are on the case! I just had visions of you having to darn the toes and heels – not a great use of your time – your yarn sounds lovely – I’m looking forward to seeing a progress pic!

    • It is the KnitPicks ‘Swish” line, which I knit a lot of my nieces sweaterrs from, that is 100% superwash Merino. 🙂 I will certainly post and yak all about the Socks Progress, in this space 🙂 Thank you Lizzi

I'd love to hear what you have to say...
